Good Friday morning, Illinois and greetings from Springfield, the site of the first televised U.S. Senate debate. This morning, I join NPR Illinois Reporter Amanda Vinicky to speak before the Citizens Club of Springfield, where we'll chat about this crazy election year.

Back to that U.S. Senate debate:
Takeaway? In the year of Donald Trump, endangered incumbent U.S. Senator Mark Kirk is a Republican running in a blue state against a war hero, who is a woman, and a minority, who is Thai born, so she has an immigrant's tale. But it is now also well publicized that Kirk opponent Tammy Duckworth has another layer of genetic patriotism as a certified Daughter of the American Revolution. Well, then, working with all of that, Kirk, who has battled verbal snafus since he suffered a stroke in 2012, fell flat last night when it seemed he was attempting to call her out as exaggerating her family's personal bio.
The controversial quote: 'I'd forgotten that your parents come all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington,' Kirk said, and the crowd went silent. Neither the moderators nor Duckworth quite knew what to do with that one off the bat. But the DSCC sure did, quickly firing off a request for an apology citing the fact that it was Kirk who in the past had exaggerated his military experience.
DSCC: "A struggling political campaign is no excuse for baseless and despicable attacks, and Senator Kirk owes Congresswoman Duckworth and her family an apology."
Story: "Kirk refers to Duckworth's Thai background during televised debate," in POLITICO Illinois: "U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk made a reference to U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth's ethnic background on Thursday night, raising eyebrows during the first televised debate of the heated Senate campaign. Kirk made the remark after Duckworth discussed her family's long history of defending the United States. 'I'd forgotten that your parents come all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington,' Kirk said, staring at Duckworth while she looked at the moderators. His remark was met with brief silence at the Sangamon Auditorium in Springfield. It was unclear if Kirk knows Duckworth's full family background. While she was born in Thailand and has spoken often about knowing what it's like to be an immigrant, her father was American born and his family's lineage has been traced back to the nation's earliest years, she said …
"Duckworth wasn't buying the explanation. 'I think it's just another one of those head-scratcher comments coming from a man who can't figure out the things he says half the time,' Duckworth told POLITICO Illinois after the debate. 'I'm proud that my mother came from Thailand … But I'm just as proud that my father's family fought in the Revolution.'"
BEING THERE -- Kirk exited Sangamon Auditorium fairly quickly, without taking press questions. But dozens of people lined up single file to take a picture and shake hands with Duckworth.
SELLABLE MOMENT -- At 9:04 p.m., just after the debate ended, the Duckworth campaign sent out a fundraising request, saying Kirk had attacked her heritage and her family, please give money!
SPOTTED -- Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti and her new spokeswoman at Obed & Isaac's Microbrewery in Springfield. Sanguinetti was accompanied by her new communications director, Marcela Cartagena. Sanguinetti said brought on a Spanish-speaking communications person who could reach out to Spanish media.

HIGH LEAD IN CHICAGO PARKS -- "Here Are The Far Northwest Side Parks With High Lead Levels," by DNA Info's Alex Nitkin: "The Far Northwest Side park found to have the highest concentration of lead in its water is Brooks Park, 7100 N. Harlem Ave., with one of its outdoor fountains recording lead levels at 145 parts per billion. Earlier this month, Chicago Park District officials announced that water at 200 Chicago parks tested positive for 'elevated' levels of lead." http://dnain.fo/2eVgpCY[6][7]
MAYBE YOU DON'T DESERVE A RAISE AFTERALL -- "Some Cook County suburbs not happy with $13 minimum wage law," in Crain's Chicago Business via AP: "Leaders from a handful of Chicago suburbs say they're looking at ways of opting out of a new Cook County law increasing the minimum wage to $13. Representatives from Elk Grove Village, Barrington and Prospect Heights tell the Daily Herald they're looking at enacting laws to supersede Wednesday's Cook County Board vote. NOT OUT OF NETWORK -- "State's online Obamacare exchange may have some info wrong, incomplete," by the Chicago Tribune's Lisa Schnecker: "Details about health plans offered on the exchange for next year were posted online Monday, giving shoppers a chance to study their options ahead of Nov. 1, when they can start to buy plans. But at least a couple of problems have surfaced since then. In Chicago and the greater Chicago area, many of Advocate Health Care's hospitals were incorrectly appearing as out-of-network in Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois' BlueCare Direct and Blue Precision plans as of Wednesday. Also, farther south, insurer Health Alliance Medical Plans' offerings weren't showing up at all." http://trib.in/2dMLETu
"Aldermen stupidly whine about World Series tickets," by the Chicago Tribune's John Kass: "Until the other day, I figured the champion of stupidity was the giant Australian cane toad, a beast so wanton that it will mate for hours with roadkill. But with the eyes of the world now on Chicago for the World Series, some Chicago aldermen are moving in on the cane toad, still insisting on their 'rights' to purchase Cubs World Series tickets at face value for games at Wrigley, even as loyal Cubs fans have to shell out thousands of dollars to scalpers for tickets." http://trib.in/2eROZhR[10]
SPRINGFIELD SPRINGS FOR FREE WIFI -- "City launches free Wi-Fi downtown," in the State Journal-Register: "Springfield residents and tourists downtown will now be able to find directions or look up store hours on their mobile phones without using data. The city has launched free Wi-Fi service, 'SpringfieldFreeWifi,' for the downtown area from Second to Ninth streets and East Jefferson Street to East Capitol Avenue." http://bit.ly/2eLktYN[11]
TRUMP IN CHICAGO SHOWS 'MODEST POCKETS OF STRENGTH' -- "Here's where Clinton, Trump collect Chicago campaign cash," by Crain's Chicago Business's Greg Hinz: "The presidential election still is almost two weeks away, but some fairly final returns are in for the equally important race to raise campaign cash. They show that, in the Chicago area are least, Clinton is the big winner. That's not unexpected. But Trump does have some modest pockets of strength." http://bit.ly/2eKDHLk[12][13]
TRONC SHARES DROP 30 PERCENT -- "Gannett, Tronc stocks sink on report banks have pulled out of merger talks," by the Chicago Tribune's Robert Channick: "Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported Gannett was set to acquire Tronc for about $18.75 per share, but several lenders withdrew from the deal over concerns that the valuation was too high. That news followed a tepid earnings report from Gannett on Thursday morning. Shares of Tronc, which publishes the Chicago Tribune, fell nearly 30 percent to an intraday low of $11.78, prompting a temporary trading halt. The stock closed at $12.27 a share, down about 28 percent." http://trib.in/2fcbBg8[14]
SUMMERS COMPLAINS ABOUT RAHM -- "Summers pulling away from the mayor who appointed him," by the Chicago Sun-Times' Fran Spielman: "If City Treasurer Kurt Summers hopes to run for higher office — be it mayor, governor or whatever — he needs to convince voters that he's not beholden to the mayor who appointed him. That pulling-away process continued Thursday when Summers used his turn on the hot seat at City Council budget hearings to complain that the mayor has not consulted him on Chicago's debt structure." http://bit.ly/2eAOES7[15]
RAHM CALLS FDA 'KEYSTONE COPS' -- "Emanuel, Cronin address Illinois heroin, opioid epidemic at summit," by Reboot Illinois's Kevin Hoffman: "Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday called out the American Medical Association, the pharmaceutical industry and the Food and Drug Administration for acting like 'keystone cops' and failing to address the flood of prescription opioid painkillers on the market. Emanuel was among the politicians, medical professionals, addiction experts and members of law enforcement from all levels of government who convened at Harold Washington College in Chicago on Thursday to discuss ways to help curb the growing heroin and opioid epidemic." http://bit.ly/2eSsrNR[16]
LOSING JOBS -- "Half of Illinois' metro areas posted unemployment increases in September," by the Chicago Tribune's Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz: "The biggest jump in the unemployment rate happened in the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island metro area on the Iowa border, more commonly known as the Quad Cities, where unemployment rose to 5.9 percent in September from 5.1 percent a year before. It also lost 4,300 jobs over the year, the most of any of the metro areas." http://trib.in/2e2lBGc[17]
SWAPPING VICTORIES -- "Stakes high third time around in North Shore congressional race between Dold, Schneider," by the Chicago Tribune's Katherine Skiba: "For former U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, it's put-up-or-shut-up time. It's self-imposed — the Deerfield Democrat is matter-of-fact about having no interest in a fourth race. To that end, he's tried to tie Dold to Trump at every turn, despite the Republican's disavowal of the presidential contender. And Schneider hopes to benefit from Illinois-raised Hillary Clintonat the top of the t icket, much as he did in 2012 when home-state President Barack Obamaled the Democratic side." http://trib.in/2eL67oj[18][19][20][21]
SUBURBS COULD BE CRUCIAL -- "Proft: Without suburbs, GOP will never regain majority in Illinois," by the Daily Herald's Kerry Lester: "Wheaton native Dan Proft has emerged as a key behind-the-scenes player in Illinois politics as the head of Liberty Principles PAC, a political action committee funneling millions of dollars to Republicans in races across the suburbs and state … In recent weeks, that has meant more than $250,000 spent in radio and television ads supporting Park Ridge Republican Mel Thillens' campaign for 28th state Senate, more than $175,000 for ads supporting Republican Heidi Holan of Glendale Heights in her campaign for 46th House, and more than $225,000 on ads in support of Dawn Abernathy of Mundelein in her campaign for 59th state House, among others." http://bit.ly/2eg1WAo[22][23]
